The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a collaborative, self-reporting system that allows vessels to broadcast their identification information, characteristics and destination, along with other information originating from on-board devices and sensors, such as location, speed and heading.
The schema of the data is provided below
SHIP_ID is the anonymized id of the ship
SPEED is measured in knots (divide value by 10)
LON is the longitude of the current ship position
LAT is the latitude of the current ship position
COURSE is the direction in which ship moves (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Course_(navigation))
HEADING (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Course_(navigation))
TIMESTAMP is the time at which the message was sent (UTC)
DEPARTURE PORT NAME is the name of the last port visited by the vessel
Temporal Coverage: 1/04/2015-28/04/2015
Spatial Coverage: Mediterranean Sea
