ESSAI & ACAI 2023 Summer School

The inaugural ESSAI & ACAI 2023 event, a combination of the European Summer School on Artificial Intelligence (ESSAI) and the Advanced Course on Artificial Intelligence (ACAI), is set to take place in Ljubljana. While ACAI has been a long-standing bi-annual tradition, ESSAI aims to establish itself as an annual summer school following the successful model of ESSLLI. The event will feature six parallel tracks, including the ACAI-2023 course focused on Artificial Intelligence for Science. With plans for in-person attendance by lecturers and a sizable audience, the organizers also intend to live-stream the lectures to accommodate a larger virtual audience. In the case of unfavorable circumstances, a hybrid or online format is readily available. The program will comprise a total of 20 courses, covering a wide range of artificial intelligence topics selected by the ESSAI Program Chairs and their dedicated committee. The ACAI-2023 course, headed by experienced Program Chairs, will consist of ten half-day tutorials. Overall, ESSAI & ACAI 2023 promises to be an exceptional educational and networking opportunity for AI enthusiasts and researchers alike.
AI on Demand platform will be promoted at the event.

ESSAI & ACAI 2023 is a combined event that brings together the European Summer School on Artificial Intelligence (ESSAI) and the Advanced Course on Artificial Intelligence (ACAI). While ACAI has been a bi-annual event with a strong tradition, ESSAI is being introduced and aims to become an annual tradition. ESSAI follows the organizational model of ESSLLI, the European Summer School in Language, Logic, and Information.

The initial edition of ESSAI will be a one-week event, but there is a long-term plan to expand it into a two-week event with a larger number of courses. The event will feature six parallel tracks, one of which will be ACAI-2023, focusing on Artificial Intelligence for Science.

ESSAI & ACAI 2023 is primarily planned as an in-person event in Ljubljana. The intention is to have lecturers and a sizable audience of 200-400 attendees present physically. However, there will also be live-streaming of the lectures to accommodate a much larger audience. In case of unfavorable epidemiological circumstances, a hybrid or online mode can be easily adopted, as provisions are being made for live streaming and recording of the lectures.

ACAI-2023 will consist of ten half-day tutorials, with each tutorial having two 90-minute sessions. The course will cover the topic of Artificial Intelligence for Science.

ESSAI will have five parallel tracks, each offering four courses. Each course will consist of five 90-minute sessions, with one session per day during the week. This means that a total of 20 courses will be included in the ESSAI program. The selection of courses will be made by the ESSAI Program Chairs and the program committee they form for this purpose. The courses will cover various topics from different areas of artificial intelligence, including foundational, introductory, and advanced subjects.

The ACAI-2023 Program Chairs, Sašo Džeroski from Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, and Ljupčo Todorovski from the University of Ljubljana, will be responsible for selecting topics and lecturers for ACAI. Both chairs have extensive experience in organizing scientific events and have expertise in the core area of Artificial Intelligence for Science.

For ESSAI-2023, Magdalena Ortiz from Umeå University will serve as the PC Chair, while Brian Logan from Utrecht University and Sašo Džeroski from Jožef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, will act as the co-chairs. Additionally, a program committee consisting of prominent scientists from various branches of AI has been formed to contribute to the selection and organization of the program.
