The taxonomy is split into two different categories. There are the AI core modules, a series of 7 modules covering all aspects in the field of AI, from its foundations to specific applications such as Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing. The second category is the Specialized AI Topic Pillars, made up of 4 different modules that serve as the fundamental background that is shared among AI-related programs in recent times. The core structure of the taxonomy can be seen below.

Each of the above modules can be broken down into many different and diverse subjects. Our hope is that it can cover every aspect of the field of Artificial Intelligence.

This top-level view of the taxonomy was not created in a vacuum but is instead fully compatible with the AIDA AI PhD curriculum. The International AI Doctoral Academy (AIDA) is a joint initiative of multiple European R&D projects, with more than 80 members as of the present. Its aim is to promote advanced AI education (at Postdoc/PhD/MSc level) by providing a wide array of educational offerings from AI courses to specialized resources, including lectures, videos and much more. The AIDA AI PhD Curriculum is a specification of the structure and content of a PhD program. The Curriculum concentrates on the doctoral training parts, splitting them like the taxonomy into Core and Specialized AI Topics, each one containing specific learning outcomes and related courses.

In the process of further collaboration between AIoD and AIDA, an automatic synchronization of the two was also created. Through a synchronous approach, educational resources that get uploaded in AIDA, can also be found via AIoD’s MyLibrary, under the relevant tab.
