AI-based Predictive Maintenance

In the course of the approved project "AI-based predictive maintenance", the research company "Software Competence Center Hagenberg GmbH" is researching predictive maintenance in production and manufacturing in collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI). This innovation is intended to reduce the generation of defective products and thus support small and medium-sized enterprises as well as industrial companies to reduce maintenance costs. In this way, it also increases their competitiveness.

The requirements of Industry 5.0 are also taken into account here, which means that this technology adapts to people instead of requiring people to adapt to the technology. This should also increase the willingness of companies to use AI. This future innovation will be implemented together with the project partners Intemac Solutions (South Moravia), AC2T research GmbH (Lower Austria), University of Budweis (South Bohemia), Compas automatizace (Vysočina) and Profactor GmbH from Vienna.

CHALLENGE

Predictive maintenance (PM) is currently considered the main use case of artificial intelligence (AI) in production. For seve- ral reasons, the associated potential of manufacturing SME, which are very well represented in the program region, is not being fully exploited. To a large extent, the prerequisites for a broad application of AI in predictive maintenance by SMEs are missing. This also includes the easy and uncomplicated application by the operating personnel on site. In contrast to maintenance staff in large companies, this is often not specially trained in terms of the possible uses, advantages and potential dangers of AI in predictive maintenance.

OBJECTIVE

The project goal is therefore the creation and transfer of general and transferable knowledge for manufacturing SME ab- out AI-based predictive maintenance, which is applicable in various sectors of production and manufacturing.

CROSS-BORDER APPROACH

This is to be achieved through research and demonstration of AI algorithms for predictive maintenance with special conside- ration of the knowledge and requirements of SME in the pro- gram region, and through cross-border networking of relevant research partners in this area to establish long-term (research) cooperation with the aim of synthesis, the exchange and joint further development of the state of knowledge on the subject of AI-based predictive maintenance of wear-prone systems or components for manufacturing SME. The careful compilation of the consortium with partners from all six program regions, all of whom are active in the project topic and who in turn also have corresponding contacts outside the program region, ensures that further know-how is gained within the project. This know- how will be passed on to the target groups - primarily to SME in the program region - in the form of knowledge transfer events. By utilizing the project partners‘ international networks, project impact outside the program area will also be guaranteed.
