What is the challenge that is being addressed?

Breast cancer is a leading cause of death for women worldwide - more than any other type of cancer (WHO). Patients suffer not only physiologically, but also psychologically from chemo- or radiation therapy as they are very stress & anxiety-provoking medical procedures.
Although psychiatric disorders affect over 1 in 3 cancer patients, they often feel left alone as soon as they leave the hospital and health care seems to stop at the hospital’s doorstep.

While human care cannot simply be replaced, modern cancer care needs to include comprehensive psychosocial support also at home.


What is the AI solution the project plans to implement?

Here novel technologies based on AI, chatbots and wearable sensing technology can help to achieve better health outcomes, while at the same time reducing costs for the health care system.

The overall objective of EscalAItor is to combine real-time sensing and lingual chatbot communication to develop novel personalized AI supported treatments at home. The chatbot integrates clinically validated quality of life questionnaires, assesses the current mood and combines it with sensor data from the iBreve wearable. The solution provides personalized recommendations, exercises and information pills based on AI. As the expression of emotions & feelings is highly influenced by language, natural language processing (NLP), natural language understanding (NLU) and a multilingual approach with AI based keyword analysis is integrated.

Predicting emotions & fatigue in breast cancer patients based on lingual and sensorial input, could dramatically improve the quality of care for patients, reduce the workload for clinicians, and advance the practice of cancer treatment through personalized treatment at home.

Who will help implement this solution?

This project is funded and supported through the first Open Call of the StairwAI project.

The selected company will receive a maximum of €60.000, that includes:

  1. fixed lump-sum: up to € 26 000
  2. vouchers: up to € 10 000 to access HW Resources and up to € 24 000 for AI experts (mentors and system integrators).
    • Support from Technical and Business Experts and access to specialized tools as a part of a Support Program.
    • levelling up the business in terms of AI maturity.
    • Improving key processes in the company, which will increase competitiveness.
