RAI – Radiotelevisione italiana

RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana is the Italian Public Service Broadcaster and Italy’s largest radio-television broadcasting company. RAI’s Centre for Research and Technological Innovation (CRITS) is active in several European and National projects and co-operates with Universities and Industries for research activities.

RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, the Italian Public Service Broadcaster and Italy’s largest radio-television broadcasting company, has played a major role in shaping the country’s life and customs over the last decades. RAI started broadcasting its radio programmes in 1924 and nowadays broadcasts over 32.000 hours of television programmes (of which 75% are produced in-house) and 52.000 hours of radio programmes per year. It has the right to broadcast radio and television programmes over the air, via cable or satellite, by wire, or by any other means.

RAI’s Centre for Research and Technological Innovation (CRITS) is active in several European and National projects and co-operates with Universities and Industries for research activities, in the definition of new standards and the development of new services. Since 1987 the CRITS has contributed to more than thirty projects, covering various aspects of broadcasting, within the R&D activities of the European Community, under FP6, FP7, H2020 and HE frameworks. 

CRITS’s expertise includes video content analysis techniques, semantic analysis of texts and multimodal content segmentation and aggregation, video quality evaluations, video coding. Moreover, CRITS has experience on 3D point cloud acquisition and denoising, 3D modelling, augmented and virtual reality on head-mounted displays. CRITS contributes to international standards, such as ITU, the EBU and DVB. Among them, CRITS contributes to MPEG and MPAI (Moving Picture, Audio and Data Coding by Artificial Intelligence) groups on video compression.
