Description of the talk: “HELIOS is an European project with fourteen partners in eight different European countries. It is funded the European Commission programme Horizon 2020, under grant 825585. From 2019, the project has developed tools for a technical platform to create for Peer-to-Peer social media services. The tools do not only contain basic messaging, but also other features like communication in contexts, information overload prevention, feedback and rewarding. With the toolkit anyone skilled in Android development can launch their own social media services without any need for setting up servers, as the communications take place between users. In this presentation the coordinator, Research Team Leader Ville Ollikainen from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will give summarize the project. Regarding the tools, the easiest way to utilize the results of HELIOS now is to join HELIOS Challenge, a competition during which a technical support team will assist participants in making novel social media apps come true. This Challenge will be introduced at the end of the presentation.”

Ville Ollikainen

CV: “Mr. Ville Ollikainen received his M.Sc. degree in Technical Physics in 1989 from Helsinki University of Technology with an academic minor in Industrial Psychology. in 1990’s he worked at Technical R&D of a broadcasting company MTV Finland, with the main responsibility for developing broadcast automation, regional advertising systems and interactive teletext services. Since 1999, Mr. Ollikainen has been working at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland as a Senior Scientist focusing on media integration and new media technologies, excluding a 2.5 year period of entrepreneurship in a data security company which he was establishing in 2007. He has contributed to about 30 patent applications and his current activities include distributed technologies in the areas of recommendation systems and social media. Mr. Ollikainen is currently working as a Research Team Leader of Applied Cryptography research team at VTT, and is coordinating an EU funded peer-to-peer social media platform project HELIOS (2019-2021). The field of his planned doctorate thesis relates to privacy in online service personalization.”
