Addressing Intersectional Bias in AI

Diversify with Intersectionally FAIRer Artificial Intelligence (DIVERSIFAIR) is a pioneering European project funded under the Erasmus+ scheme, that aims to address intersectional fairness in the context of AI systems across the European Union (EU). By focusing on use cases, data, and models originating or deployed in Europe, the project goes beyond existing approaches to algorithmic bias and fairness. Unlike traditional approaches that focus on a single protected characteristic, DIVERSIFAIR considers the social identities and individual positions that emerge at the intersection of multiple protected characteristics.

Promoting Intersectional Fairness in AI 

This project aims to shine a light on those who are invisible in society’s gaze and promote intersectional fairness in AI, aligning with the European Union principles of equality and inclusion. 

With eight consortium partners from six EU countries, including educational institutions, research organisations, businesses, and non-governmental organisations, DIVERSIFAIR will raise social awareness, influence policy-making, and provide future-proof AI training.

DIVERSIFAIR addresses two needs:

• Overcome scarcity of experts who can address discrimination in the context of AI systems

• Integrate an intersectional approach to understand and combat bias, discrimination, and inequality in the context of AI systems
