With its multi-campus structure, UniBO is a large comprehensive public university (about 88K students, nearly 6K permanent staff), structured around 5 Schools, 32 Departments and a number of centres of excellence as well as inter-departmental research & innovation centres, that cover all domains of knowledge. In terms of research, UniBO is characterised by a combination of subject specialisation and multidisciplinarity, which is promoted towards tackling societal challenges through a shared vision and coordinated action at local and European level, supported by Thematic Strategic Groups. UniBO actively participates in the main national and international initiatives involved in the definition of strategic agendas for research and innovation and which serve as useful platforms for networking and internationalisation. In the last three years it has been the first university in Italy in terms of fund attraction in Horizon 2020.

AI Activities

The University of Bologna has just funded a AI interdisciplinary research center that glues the many AI related research activities that are already existing in many departments. The center is called ALMA-AI and drives its research toward the following areas:
- Basic Research: Foundations of AI including ethical, legal economic, cultural and social aspects, AI and hard science
- AI for the economic growth: AI for industry and AI and HPC
- AI for society: AI for health and well being, Humanistic AI, AI for law and governance.

The center glues 27 departments and more than 300 researchers and grows in an ecosystem (Bologna) where the 70% of Italian computing power is installed. Also the region is very active in Bid data and AI initiatives and UNIBO is leading a national competence center on industry 4.0
